S.H.E. Empowers is committed to help with food insecurities. We provide food to low-income families, disabled individuals, senior citizens & disadvantaged individuals for the Thanksgiving holiday. With record high inflation and the rising cost of food, more people are needing help. This event fights hunger and bring awareness about hunger in the local community. As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s time to reflect with gratitude on the blessings that you’ve received. While making your holiday plans and reflecting on all you must be thankful for, it’s also a good time to think about those who are less fortunate and consider whether you can be of assistance to those who are in need.
At S.H.E. Empowers, Inc., we are committed to aiding and empowering others for a better life. We will host the 4th Annual Big Man Big Heart Thanksgiving Food Drive on Saturday, November 16, 2024, from 10 am – 12 noon, in honor of David Johnson (“Big Man”). The purpose of this event is to provide food to low-income families, disabled individuals and senior citizens for the Thanksgiving holiday in the Palm Bay/Melbourne area. This event will fight hunger and bring awareness about hunger in the local community.

$25 donation will help a family with a meal in a bag for a family.
$40 donation will feed a family with a meal in a bag for a family & a gift card for a turkey or ham.

About mid-May of 2021, my father began to experience a change from his normal health condition. His health had quickly and drastically changed so much that he was hospitalized twice within a month’s span. It was then, that we found out that my father had Pancreatic cancer. Not only was he diagnosed, but it was determined that it was aggressively spreading to other vital organs. On July 10, 2021, my father gained his wings. Five days later, I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.
My dad, whose nickname was Big Man, was a very caring and loving person. He was very social and never met a stranger. He talked and listened to any and everyone. If you ever spoke with him, chances are he would ask you how you were doing, talk about sports and something about food: “What did you eat? What are you cooking? Maybe you should try making this…”. If you ever visited his home, it was guaranteed that he would offer you something to eat and some to go. If he had it, even if it was his last, it was yours.
Losing my father, someone who I literally talked to everyday, was by far the hardest things I had to go through. Although this was and still is a reality that’s hard to accept, I had to figure out how to properly grieve but not be taken over by sadness. I had a newborn, a very active toddler and husband who all still needed me to be present in my household.
I quickly found out that my grieving would be through reflection. Reflecting on all the great memories my father and I shared gives me a sense of comfort and sometimes a good laugh. I wanted my grieving to be channeled in such a way that my father’s loving and kind spirit will forever be felt.
In doing so, I came up with the idea to do a food drive in remembrance of my father. He loved food and always gave to others. I decided to partner with S.H.E. Empowers, Inc., a non-profit organization, whose mission is to help disadvantaged children, individuals, families, and communities. This Thanksgiving Food drive, Big Man Big Heart, is not only in honor of my father, but it will give back to the community that once served him.
